This is Reidun (left) and Antonette, both 87 years old and coming from Narvik in northern Norway. They are cousins of my late grandmother, but not sisters. Their home town Narvik is where they've lived all their lives. During WW2 it was heavily bombed and it suffered one of the earliest occupations the Nazi's carried out because of its strategic importance. There is a.o. a railway in Narvik that is linked directly to Sweden and mining activities, and Hitler wanted to control that. Both these women were there then and could tell lots of it first-hand. Before Narvik got its present name it was called Victoriahavn/Port Victoria, presumably in honour of the then English Queen Victoria. Reidun told us she has chosen not to renew her driving licence again. Not because of ill health or anything. She just wants to enjoy having a glass of cognac/brandy every morning instead!
