I bakgrunnen ser du foroevrig Narikala-festningen.
The Old City in Tbilisi is famous for its wooden houses with 'hanging' balconies outside the main structure of the ho use. These balconies are an important social arena whether you are on one or below it. Since the city lies along two hillsides and down towards a river there are also a lot of nooks and crans around which to build the houses and that adds funny angles to many houses. This picture is a typical example of this architecture. In the background you see the Narikala fortress on the hilltop.

These are some of the house facades on the Abanotubani Square, where the old sulphur baths like (outside the left edge of the picture). Since the Rose Revolution there has been an extensive renovation of much of the Old City; they have demolished the old houses and built new ones while remaining faithful to the old building style. It is very impressive what they've managed to do. I live in a flat in one of those old houses that has not been renovated and carpenters would have a field day trying to straighten out all the angles and getting it 'right'. However, I think it is great that they don't demolish houses only because central and local authorities want to renovate the area. They rather depend on people owning the houses/flats to actually WANT to sell it and make it available for renovation.
Men utrolig sjarmerende.
Another one of the houses at Abanotubani. In the old days (peaking during the 19th century) many such houses were built next to, on top of and in between each other and it could look pretty chaotic from the outside. But incredibly charming, and they've managed to keep that charm and characteristic even after renovations.

This is not the traditional old building style but rather it is Tbilisi's only mosque. Beria, the man who a.o. lead the Soviet Union security apparatus from the 1930s, through World War II and up until 1953 (when he was arrested and executed) came from Georgia. During his time in power large-scale killings took place at the hand of the Soviet Union. These plans and actions came about as a result of the symbiosis between Beria and Stalin, who also was from Georgia. In Tbilisi all the mosques but this one were destroyed, as only the Orthodox Church was accepted to some extent by the Soviet Union authorities. And even that church was state-controlled in every detail.

Takk for spennende informasjon!
